Book excerpt: What did generations of Indiana University students think about their years on campus—the faculty, courses, administration, pressing social issues, and each other? Through student writings and art featured in The Well House Reader, the Bloomington campus across the years vividly and sometimes whimsically comes to life. Featuring selections from more than 150 years of student writing, The Well House Reader, edited Donald J. Gray, demonstrates how students voiced their views and opinions through their contributions to campus magazines and yearbooks. From the use of satiric couplets to ridicule university president Cyrus Nutt in 1872, parody and caricature to mock the Ku Klux Klan in 1924, and long form essays to complain about the university administration in the 1960s, IU students always made their opinions clear. They wrote burlesques to mock their teachers, essays to honor them, and short stories about the satisfaction and sadness of graduation and departure from their beloved alma mater. Poignant and revealing, The Well House Reader offers unforgettable glimpses of Indiana University through the eyes and experiences of its students across the decades.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Owned by the National Trust and managed by English Heritage, Mount Grace Priory in North Yorkshire, established in 1398 and suppressed in 1539, was one of only nine successful Carthusian monasteries in England and one of the best-preserved medieval houses of that order in Europe. First excavated by Sir William St John Hope in 1896-1900 and in state guardianship since 1955 it is acknowledged as a type site for late-medieval Carthusian monasteries. The modern study of Mount Grace began in 1957 when Hope’s interpretation of the monks’ cells about the great cloister was found to be simplistic. This was followed between 1968 and 1974 by the excavation of individual monks’ cells in the west range of the great cloister and two cells in the north range, together with their gardens, areas not excavated by Hope. The examination of the monks’ cells was completed in 1985 by the excavation of the central cell of the north cloister range, together with its garden and the cloister alley outside the cell. The cultural material recovered from these cells indicated the ‘trade’ each monk practiced, predominantly the copying and binding of books. Because each cell was enclosed by high walls, the pottery and metalwork recovered could be identified to an individual monk. In 1987 English Heritage commissioned the re-excavation of two areas that had been examined by Hope, the water tower in the great cloister and the prior’s cell, refectory and kitchen in the south cloister range and the guest house in the west range of the inner court. The contrast between this semi-public area of the monastery and the monks’ cells was dramatic. Coupled with this excavation was a reappraisal of the architectural development of the monastery and reconstruction of lost structures such as the cloister alley walls and the central water tower.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set in medieval, Tudor and Stuart England, we discover how the family became involved with the secretive Knights Templar and then spread around the country. There were great landowners associated with Kings and Queens. Some were persecuted, arrested, imprisoned, tortured and suffered horrific executions. One followed the Mayflower to New England only to fall victim to native Indians. We find wonderful cases of jury fixing, insurrection, Lollardry, murder and false imprisonment. There were clandestine meetings, hidden treasures, forfeiture of lands, and piracy against the Spanish. There was a murderous monk who became personal servant to the King; a Lady-in-Waiting to the Queen, who was also the King's mistress; a designer of Warships and co-founder of the Royal Society. We have Lords of the Manor, Elizabethan Actors who knew Shakespeare and even a martyred Saint. These extraordinary tales of our ancestors' lives make this book compelling reading.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mystery of Lizzie Borden has captivated the public as perhaps one of the most celebrated cases in our American justice system. Comparisons can be made to more modern-day trials, such as the O.J. Simpson trial, or the trails of Jodie Arias, Casey Anthony, and Susan Smith, which kept us riveted to our television screens to watch the gavel to gavel coverage of these sensational trials. Presented here for the first time in dialog form, are the full transcripts of the principal individuals, Bridget Sullivan, the servant, Emma Borden, Lizzie’s sister, those first on the scene – Mrs. Churchill, the neighbor, the police officers, and others who testified in the “Trial of the Century”. By close examination of the testimonies new light may now be shed on what the jurors heard and a better understanding of how they came to their not guilty verdict. Did Lizzie Borden commit the murders? Examine all of the evidence and arrive at your own conclusion.

Book excerpt: In a remote mountain area of Tennessee, there is a small, virtually unknown town, named Jessup. The inhabitants of this town, the Jessupites, are all descendants of the original Puralist religious movement that settled Jessup in the early 1800's; all save one. Doctor John Roberts has only been a member of the community for the past five years, having moved to Jessup upon the occasion of his grandmother's death. John's grandmother had at one time been a Jessupite but had left the community in disenchantment with the Puralist way of life. What Abigail Wilson Roberts left behind at her demise was a diary that told all about Jessup and the Puralists, and something else that immediately caught John's attention. What he read, in the diary, motivated his move to his grandmother's former home in the mountains of Tennessee. Now that John Roberts had moved into Jessup, the Puralists had a real doctor for the first time in their existence, and along with him came problems the Jessupites never imagined they would ever face. What John Roberts brought with him would test their moral convictions, and, eventually, threaten their very existence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As children, James and John were inseparable. They did everything together, including things Texas Panhandle townsfolk probably didnt appreciate. The good thing, though, if ever one of them was suspected of doing something wrong, the other could stand up and play alibi. In fact, the other could even stand in and take the punishment if need be, because James and John were identical twins. On a winter day in 1956, the birth of these boys was something of a miracle. Their tiny town would never be the same, especially as the boys grew into their nicknamesThe Terrible Twosome, The Sons of Thunder, or The Daring Duo. For James and John, these werent just nicknames; they were ways of life, as they set off on world-wide adventuresone in the navy and one as a firefighter and paramedic. No matter the distance between them, the twins had an unshakable connection, built on a lifetime of strong family support. It wasnt always easy raising two boys, but with unconditional love, the Honea family made it happen. Being a twin is like no other experience on earth, and being a Honea twin is even more exciting. Through danger, adventure, and brotherly love, the ties of family kept them together.
