Book excerpt: The incredible story of the world’s largest visionary environment: the Rock Garden of Chandigarh, kept secret by outsider artist Nek Chand for fifteen years. After the partition of India in 1947, Nek Chand Saini settled in the city of Chandigarh, with nothing but stories brought from his homeland. Dismayed at his stark new surroundings, Nek began collecting river rocks, broken glass, and cracked water pots found on the roadside. He cleared a section of jungle and for seven years he stockpiled odds and ends. They were castoffs and rubbish to everyone else, but to Nek, they were treasures. He began to build a labyrinth of curving paths, mosaics, and repeating patterns: his very own tribute to the winding village of his youth, a hidden land of stories. Nek kept his kingdom secret for fifteen years, until a government crew stumbled upon it and sought to destroy it. But local fans agreed in awe: the Rock Garden had to be protected. Author Barb Rosenstock introduces readers to the outsider artist’s stunning creation, while Claire A. Nivola’s illustrations bring to life the land’s natural beauty and the surreal world Nek coaxed from his wild landscape.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Against a background of the strife-torn land of Judea two thousand years ago, Mika Waltari has written what is certainly his most important novel. Seeking the meaning to his life in the study of philosophy, the young Roman. Marcus Manilianus, discovers in an Alexandrian library a vast number of predictions, all tending to confirm his own feeling that the world is about to enter upon a new era. Two chance encounters with Jews who proclaim the coming of a world leader whom they call the Messiah or King, cause Marcus to resolve to make a visit to the Holy City of the Jews. He arrives outside Jerusalem in time to see crowds—some curious, some shocked—staring up at three crosses on a nearby mound. Above the center cross, an inscription had been fixed: JESUS OF NAZARETH, KING OF THE JEWS. The quest that ensues leads Marcus through all parts of Jerusalem and into contact with men and women of all stations of life who had known this remarkable man. And by degrees, wonderful if strange things are revealed to him of Jesus’ teaching, and he experiences the odd sensation of almost believing in the destiny of this crucified Roman among the alien Jews, Stands alone on the borderline of two worlds, feelings he belongs to neither, and it becomes vital to him to find “the way, “the Kingdom,” to again knowledge and certainty, not merely belief. What follows, as Marcus pursues his search for the promised secret of the Kingdom, bring to a climax as exciting and deeply moving a novel as Mika Waltari, certainly one of the world’s outstanding historical novelists, has ever written. It is a story of a time long past, yet it deals with a theme as modern as today: the dilemma of modern man and his culture in gaining and retaining a faith. And always present throughout the novel is the splendor, the irony and humor which have so delighted millions of readers of other Waltari novels from The Egyptian to The Etruscan.

Book excerpt: "The Secret of the Kingdom of God" is a systematic and comprehensive view of the Kingdom of God which introduces a coherent and unifying model, organized around the aspects of the Kingdom found in Scripture. It provides a working definition of the Kingdom and offers abundant cross-referencing of Bible verses throughout. This is not just another book on the Kingdom of God. How is it different? Most Christian books on the Kingdom focus on a particular aspect such as the Millennium; or on a certain portion of the Kingdom, as seen in the Gospel of Matthew, for example. Authors who do cover more ground usually fail to present a systematic and more comprehensive view. The reader generally comes away with a handful of confusing loose ends and without a working knowledge of how it all comes together. "The Secret of the Kingdom of God" answers questions about the nature of the Kingdom, how to enter the Kingdom, why studying this subject is so important, and much more. Finally, a book about the Kingdom of God that brings all the different aspects together in one volume! A book that helps the reader fit the pieces together, stand back and see the big picture. It's time every believer become well-acquainted with this subject since the Kingdom of God is the central theme of the Bible and has everything to do with who we are, where we came from and where we are going.

If you are one who is attracted to the liberal gospel, this guide might just save your soul." —MICHAEL E. WITTMER, Grand Rapids Theological Seminary Recently use of Kingdom language in evangelicalism has markedly increased, and rightly so, as the Kingdom is central to the gospel and teachings of Jesus. Several scholars have noted similarities between this language and Protestant liberalism. Yet they have not significantly explored how liberal theology is impacting evangelical notions of the Kingdom, and consequently the gospel. Reimagining the Kingdom traces the development of this language through four generations of liberals—from Schleiermacher to Ritschl, Rauschenbusch, and Tillich—to explore how their liberal language is affecting evangelical theology, as illustrated by progressive evangelical and Emergent Brian McLaren. By exploring how theological liberals define the human problem, understand that problem’s solution, and interpret the nature of the One who bore that solution, this book reveals an inextricable link between progressive evangelicalism and Protestant liberalism. It is vitally important that evangelicals understand the contours of liberal Kingdom theology to understand how it is affecting how evangelicals are showing and telling the gospel itself.

Book excerpt: Thy Kingdom Come is a panoramic overview of the present reign of Jesus Christ at the right hand of God the Father and of the future consummation of that reign. It presents three authoritative apostolic New Testament guidelines for the interpretation of the Old Testament prophecies. It fairly examines the three main positions on the millennium and offers scriptural conclusions that incorporate elements of truth from all three. Detailed expositions of the 110th Psalm and the book of Revelation are based on the apostolic guidelines. Harold Patterson was born in Portland, Oregon in 1920. In 1942 he was appointed as a Patrol Inspector in the Immigration Border Patrol, and was assigned to work on the Mexican border in Southern California. His career as a Border Patrolman was interrupted by military service during WW II. During his military service he met and married Shirley Van Hamm in Denver, Colorado. In 1951 Harold and Shirley enrolled in BIOLA Bible College in Los Angeles. After graduation they accepted teaching positions in Taholah, Washington on the Quinault Indian Reservation. They remained in Taholah for 17 years and served the Indian community in various ways during that time. To upgrade his professional skills Harold earned the Bachelor of Education degree at Seattle Pacific University and the Master of Education degree at the University of Washington. In 1972 Mr. Patterson was appointed Associate Supervisor of Indian Education for the State of Washington, and served in that capacity for nine years. He also served as a lay minister and Bible teacher in various churches. In 1972 the Pattersons moved to a ranch at Brooklyn, Washington. Throughout the years Harold maintained a very close relationship with the Quinault people, and in 2005 he was adopted as an enrolled member of the Quinault Indian Nation.
