Book excerpt: “Like All the Light We Cannot See, The Paris Hours explores the brutality of war and its lingering effects with cinematic intensity. The ending will leave you breathless.” —Christina Baker Kline, author of Orphan Train and A Piece of the World One day in the City of Light. One night in search of lost time. Paris between the wars teems with artists, writers, and musicians, a glittering crucible of genius. But amidst the dazzling creativity of the city’s most famous citizens, four regular people are each searching for something they’ve lost. Camille was the maid of Marcel Proust, and she has a secret: when she was asked to burn her employer’s notebooks, she saved one for herself. Now she is desperate to find it before her betrayal is revealed. Souren, an Armenian refugee, performs puppet shows for children that are nothing like the fairy tales they expect. Lovesick artist Guillaume is down on his luck and running from a debt he cannot repay—but when Gertrude Stein walks into his studio, he wonders if this is the day everything could change. And Jean-Paul is a journalist who tells other people’s stories, because his own is too painful to tell. When the quartet’s paths finally cross in an unforgettable climax, each discovers if they will find what they are looking for. Told over the course of a single day in 1927, Alex George's The Paris Hours takes four ordinary people whose stories, told together, are as extraordinary as the glorious city they inhabit.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explore the history and bohemian glamour of Paris between the two world wars, with this unique traveler’s companion. Paris has long been a center of art, culture, and romance—but during the 1920s, its magnetism was especially irresistible. From around the world writers, artists, and composers steamed in, to visit or linger, and in some cases to stay. Stories from this time and place abound: Sarah Bernhardt sleeping in a coffin to overcome her fear of death; Igor Stravinsky diving through a huge wreath at the premiere of his ballet Les Noces; Ford Madox Ford meeting Ernest Hemingway; Langston Hughes near starvation; Josephine Baker establishing her nightclub. Rich with anecdotes and gossip—and arranged by geographical sections with cross-references and maps—this book is a delight for both actual travelers and armchair travelers, documenting the Jazz Age denizens of the city, their haunts and habits, comings and goings, and relationships intimate and artistic. “Going to Paris without this book is like going to the Folies-Bergère without your glasses.” —Robert Coover, author of The Public Burning

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why has jewellery and body adornment often been marginalized in studies of modernist art and design? This study explores the relationship between jewellery, modernism and modernity from the 'jazz age' to the second world war in order to challenge the view that these portable art forms have only a minor role to play in histories of modernism. From the masterworks of the Parisian jewellery houses to the film and photography of Man Ray, this study seeks to present jewellery in a new light, where issues of representation and display are considered to be as important in the creation of a modern 'jewellery culture' as the objects themselves. Drawing on material from museums, archives, contemporary journals, memoirs, literary and theoretical texts, this study shows how the emergence of modern jewellery began to seriously question conventional notions of body adornment.

Book excerpt: This study brings images of holy motherhood and childbearing into the center of an art-historical enquiry, showing how images worked not only to script and maintain gender and social roles within patriarchal society but also to offer viewers ways of managing those roles. Some of the manuscripts discussed are relatively unknown and their images and texts are made available to readers for the first time. Through an adaptation of Baxandall’s ‘period eye,’ the study considers the many ‘cognitive habits’ acquired by aristocratic lay women and men through familiarity with prayers for childbirth, the lying-in ceremony, and the rite of churching. It then uses this methodology to interpret the images and prayers in six bespoke manuscripts, including the Fitzwilliam Hours and the Hours of Marguerite of Foix. This book was produced with financial assistance from The Medieval Academy of America, The Scouloudi Foundation and The Weiss-Brown Subvention of The Newberry Library, Chicago.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Wrong Side of Paris, the final novel in Balzac’s The Human Comedy, is the compelling story of Godefroid, an abject failure at thirty, who seeks refuge from materialism by moving into a monastery-like lodging house in the shadows of Notre-Dame. Presided over by Madame de La Chanterie, a noblewoman with a tragic past, the house is inhabited by a remarkable band of men—all scarred by the tumultuous aftermath of the French Revolution—who have devoted their lives to performing anonymous acts of charity. Intrigued by the Order of the Brotherhood of Consolation and their uplifting dedication to virtuous living, Godefroid strives to follow their example. He agrees to travel—incognito—to a Parisian slum to save a noble family from ruin. There he meets a beautiful, ailing Polish woman who lives in great luxury, unaware that just outside her bedroom door her own father and son are suffering in dire poverty. By proving himself worthy of the Brotherhood, Godefroid finds his own spiritual redemption. This vivid portrait of the underbelly of nineteenth-century Paris, exuberantly rendered by Jordan Stump, is the first major translation in more than a century of Balzac’s forgotten masterpiece L’Envers de l’histoire contemporaine. Featuring an illuminating Introduction by Adam Gopnik, this original Modern Library edition also includes explanatory notes.

Their efforts to capture Batdadi take Jake and his fellow SEALs to various locations in Europe and the United States, but the wily terrorist eludes them at every turn. In the midst of their hunt, they learn that, with Jessica’s help, Batdadi is plotting a bold terrorist strike on American soil. For Batdadi, it is an opportunity to put himself in the “terrorist hall of fame” alongside the likes of Osama Bin Laden. For Jessica, it is the ultimate form of revenge against the journalists she holds responsible for ruining her life. Battling a ticking clock, international criminal masterminds, and his own grief, Jake strives to transform his troubled relationship with Jessica from a liability into an asset, his only hope of saving thousands of innocent lives—not to mention his soul.
