Book excerpt: One of the first woman authors, Julian of Norwich produced in Revelations of Divine Love a remarkable work of revelatory insight, that stands alongside The Cloud of Unknowing and Piers Plowman as a classic of Medieval religious literature After fervently praying for a greater understanding of Christ's passion, Julian of Norwich, a fourteenth-century anchorite and mystic, experienced a series of divine revelations. Through these 'showings', Christ's sufferings were revealed to her with extraordinary intensity, but she also received assurance of God's unwavering love for man and his infinite capacity for forgiveness. Written in a vigorous English vernacular, the Revelations are one of the most original works of medieval mysticism and have had a lasting influence on Christian thought. This edition of the Revelations contains both the short text, which is mainly an account of the 'showings' themselves and Julian's initial interpretation of their meaning, and the long text, completed some twenty years later, which moves from vision to a daringly speculative theology. Elizabeth Spearing's translation preserves Julian's directness of expression and the rich complexity of her thought. An introduction, notes and appendices help to place the works in context for modern readers. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

Book excerpt: Julian of Norwich is esteemed as one of the subtlest writers and profoundest thinkers of the English Middle Ages for her account of the revelations that she experienced in 1373. Julian lived as an anchoress in Norwich, and after recovering from a serious illness she described the visions that had come to her during her suffering. She conceived of a loving and compassionate God, merciful and forgiving, and believed in our ability to reach self-knowledge through sin. She wrote of God as our mother, and embraced strikingly independent theological opinions. This translation conveys the poise and serenity of Julian's prose style to the modern reader. It includes both the short and long texts, written twenty years apart, through which Julian developed her ideas.

Book excerpt: The Revelations of Julian of Norwich (sixteen visions inspired by the crucified Christ which she received during a serious illness) are recorded in two versions: the short text, written near the time; and the better-known second version, completed some twenty years later. The short text has a personal quality which Julian chose, probably for reasons of modesty, to edit out in her later version, but it has a simplicity and natural grace which give a clear sense of Julian as a person, and has been chosen by Frances Beer as the basis of this translation. Also included is Julian's doctrine of the Motherhood of God, excerpted from the long text. The introduction covers Julian's life and places her in the larger context of the fourteenth-century English mystical tradition.

Her ancient wisdom is as relevant now as it was in the 14th century's world of plague, prejudice, and war. Discover Julian's joyous affirmation of the certainty of Divine love, a love that overcomes all."Julian would be pleased with this rendering of the Showings into contemporary English. The even-handed blending here of simple language and the grandeur of Julian's content is flawless; and the happy result is that the Showings slip into our minds and hearts as effortlessly as if the mystic of Norwich were speaking to us herself, face-to-face and soul-to-soul."--Phyllis Tickle, founding editor of Publishers Weekly Religion Department, author of The Great Emergence, How Christianity is Changing and Why; The Words of Jesus, A Gospel of the Sayings of Our Lord; and the Divine Hours series.

Book excerpt: In Rethinking the Medieval Legacy for Contemporary Theology, six distinguished theologians bridge medieval and contemporary theologies by developing the theological significance of medieval insights in response to contemporary issues. Their nuanced readings of medieval texts, extended to major theological issues of our time, provide examples of the retrieval of the medieval tradition, an essential part of any contemporary theological reconstruction. Barbara Newman extends the theology of perichoresis or mutual indwelling to illuminate the relationship between donor and recipient in the case of organ transplants; Marilyn McCord Adams applies insights about divine friendship to the perennial issue of horrendous evil; and Kevin Madigan brings principles of medieval exegesis to bear on the contemporary historical critical approach to biblical interpretation. Ingolf U. Dalferth applies insights from the doctrine of divine omnipotence and creation ex nihilo to deconstruct Heidegger’s limitation of the possibilities of authentic existence to historical facticity. Pim Valkenberg explores the possibilities of a theological encounter between Christianity and Islam in the works of Aquinas and Nicholas of Cusa; and Anselm K. Min applies the analogical insights of Aquinas on the nature and limits of human knowledge of God to a critique of contemporary theologies that claim to know either too little or too much about God.

Book excerpt: Julian of Norwich (c. 8 November 1342 - c. 1416), also called Juliana of Norwich, was an English anchoress and an important Christian mystic and theologian. Her Revelations of Divine Love, written around 1395, is the first book in the English language known to have been written by a woman. The Revelations of Divine Love (which also bears the title A Revelation of Love - in Sixteen Shewings above the first chapter) is a 14th-century book of Christian mystical devotions written by Julian of Norwich. It includes her sixteen mystical visions and contemplations on universal love and hope in a time of plague, religious schism, uprisings and war. Published in 1395, it is the first published book in the English language to be written by a woman. During her early life, the Black Death hit the city of Norwich three times. It is estimated that the plague killed about a third of England's population in one single epidemic. People died so quickly and in such numbers that "the dead could not receive proper burial and in the worst of times, lay stacked in carts like so much cordwood, or in hastily dug pits on the edge of town, or simply where they fell, in the streets." Seeing these images may have affected Julian, who was just six years old when the plague first hit Norwich. Although she does not speak of the plague directly, her book shows a deep sensitivity to suffering and dying.

Many people are familiar with the phrase “All shall be well” but do not know much, if anything, about Julian of Norwich, the fourteenth-century English mystic who wrote those words. Thomas Merton declared her to be “without a doubt one of the most wonderful of all Christian voices,” and former Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams says that her writings “may well be the most important work of Christian reflection in the English language.” This accessible introduction to Julian’s Revelations of Divine Love, an extended reflection on a series of her mystical visions, includes an informative introduction that addresses the historical, cultural and sociological context of Julian’s life and writings. Mary Earle’s facing-page commentary focuses on Julian’s profoundly hopeful vision of humanity and God, her creative imagery and her rigorous honesty about the spiritual life. Drawing directly from Julian’s text, Earle addresses a variety of topics essential to understanding Julian’s mysticism, including the infinite nature of God, the life of prayer, God’s suffering with us, the eternal and undying life of the soul, the motherhood of Jesus and the motherhood of God, “all shall be well” and more.

Del Mastro's translation, originally published over 15 years ago, has been one of the most widely read & critically acclaimed. In The Revelation of Divine Love in Sixteen Showings, we learn about the spiritual life of a woman who sought, from evidence of God's passion, to embrace suffering more fully & share her response with Christians for all time. Del Mastro's revised Introduction casts Julian in a broader light as an appealing feminine example for a new generation of readers - a guide to encountering divine love in our own life. As Thomas Merton once wrote, "I think Julian of Norwich is, with Newman, the greatest English theologian."

Book excerpt: The Revelations of Divine Love are Lady Julian of Norwich's explanations of her religious visions involving Jesus Christ - they are among the most poignant examples of Christian writing in the Middle Ages. First published in the late-14th century, Revelations of Divine Love is a series of devotional writings by one of Christianity's most revered mystics and visionaries. The text describes the sixteen visions Julian experienced, and includes her interpretation of their mystical and theological meanings. The reflections of Lady Julian were a comfort at a time when the Black Death, or bubonic plague, was ravaging Europe. Julian herself is thought to have lost her family to the plague, having taken up the position of anchoress as a means of self-quarantine from an epidemic which would eventually claim over a third of Europe's population.

Book excerpt: Julian of Norwich the best-known of the medieval mystics today. The text of her Revelation has circulated continually since the fifteenth century, but the twentieth century saw a massive expansion of her popularity. Theological or literary-historical studies of Julian may remark in passing on her popularity, but none have attempted a detailed study of her reception. This collection fills that gap: it outlines the full reception history from the extant manuscripts to the present day, looking at Julian in devotional cultures, in modernist poetry and present-day popular literature, and in her iconography in Norwich, both as a pilgrimage site and a tourist attraction.
